Accessibility Statement
What has been done to make this site usable for everyone, and how to tell me it is not.
Last updated 2026-09-04
The standard
This site aims to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That is the level referenced by the ADA and by Section 508, and it is the right target for a site whose whole purpose is that people can read it.
What has been done
- Text colour is checked against its background for at least 4.5:1 contrast, and interface elements such as form field borders for at least 3:1. The muted grey used across the site was specifically darkened to clear that bar.
- Interactive controls are at least 24 by 24 pixels, so a slider or a link is not a pixel-hunt.
- Every page uses a real heading structure, one H1 and properly nested H2s, so a screen reader can navigate by headings. The article archive was rewritten to fix this.
- Images carry alt text, and decorative images are hidden from assistive technology rather than described pointlessly.
- The site works from the keyboard, and focus is visible when you tab.
- Nothing autoplays with sound, and video loads only when you ask for it.
- If your system asks for reduced motion, the site honours it: the moving ticker on the home page stops, smooth scrolling is turned off, and transitions are cut.
- The site is light-only by design, with a single high-contrast palette, rather than a dark mode that has been half-tested.
Known limitations
The archive carries several years of articles brought over from the previous site. The alt text on some older images is thinner than I would write today, and I am working through them.
Embedded YouTube players are YouTube's, and their accessibility is largely outside my control.
If something does not work
Email support@ryansmithdds.com and tell me what page, what you were trying to do, and what got in the way. What assistive technology and browser you use helps a lot. I will reply, and I would rather fix it than defend it.
If you cannot get at something you need, tell me and I will get it to you another way while the page is being fixed.
