DSO
Dental Support Organization: a company that owns or backs multiple dental practices, providing shared administrative support.
Also called: Dental Support Organization, Dental Service Organization
A DSO, or Dental Support Organization, provides administrative, marketing, purchasing and back-office support to multiple dental practices, either through ownership or a management services arrangement, letting individual practices, or their affiliated dentists, focus on clinical care while the DSO handles much of the business infrastructure at scale. DSOs range from small regional groups to large national organizations, and they are one of the most active buyers of dental practices in the current market.
For a selling dentist, a DSO offer often comes with a large, headline purchase price, but the real number to evaluate is the guaranteed, after-tax cash actually received at closing, not the total figure, which is frequently bundled with restrictive employment contracts, earn-outs the seller can't fully control, and equity or stock in the DSO itself that may or may not ever be worth what it's valued at on paper. Comparing a DSO offer against a traditional sale requires pulling apart the headline number into its actual guaranteed and contingent pieces.
For a practice owner competing against DSO-backed offices for patients and staff, understanding how DSO economics work (their scale advantages and their real constraints) is also part of building a private-practice strategy that plays to different strengths rather than trying to out-DSO a DSO.
