Dentrix Ascend, 2014: the first cloud practice management system from the company that owned Dentrix
Henry Schein announced Dentrix Ascend in April 2014 as its first cloud-based practice management system, sold by monthly subscription after an early adopter program. Ten years later its filings put the software business in a joint venture, Henry Schein One, with 95,000 practices and $675 million of segment sales.

Covered
3- General dental practices choosing between a server in the office and a subscription in a browser: this is the moment the incumbent brand offered both
- Multi-location owners and groups, who are the reason the cloud argument stuck; Henry Schein One now sells Jarvis Analytics and DSO tooling alongside the practice management systems
- Anyone comparing vendors: the fiscal 2025 10-K names Eaglesoft, Carestream Dental, Open Dental, PlanetDDS, CareStack, Curve Dental and others as competitors, which is a useful list from a filing rather than a review site
Not covered
3- Dentrix itself. Dentrix Dental Systems, the on-premise product, is a separate line and still appears in the fiscal 2025 user base alongside Ascend; buying one is not migrating to the other
- Feature and performance claims. Uptime, AI functions, workflow and 'real-time' dashboards described on the product sites are the company's own statements, not verified here and not reviewed by any regulator
- Anything clinical or regulatory. Nothing in this record is an FDA clearance, and using cloud software does not by itself satisfy the HIPAA Security Rule, which remains the practice's obligation

What it says
The announcement itself is short. Orthodontic Products reported on April 8, 2014 that "Henry Schein Inc, Melville, NY, has introduced Dentrix Ascend, the company's first cloud-based practice management system," and that "Having completed beta testing, Dentrix Ascend features a Web-based practice management system that enhances practice efficiency by incorporating cloud-based technology, such as automatic data backup, simple upgrades, and around-the-clock access." Kevin Bunker, then president of Henry Schein North American Dental Practice Solutions, is quoted saying the product "provides a completely new experience in dental practice management" with "an entirely new, easy-to-learn interface that we created based on hundreds of hours of usability research," and that "while most software systems provide reports that look back at data from the month before, Dentrix Ascend provides a dashboard of real-time information." The commercial terms in the report: "Customers can subscribe to Dentrix Ascend on a monthly basis," and a subscription "includes patient reminder services and electronic insurance claim submission." Every one of those sentences is the company describing its own product.
The filings put a date on the run-up. Henry Schein's Form 10-K for fiscal 2013, filed with the SEC on February 11, 2014, two months before the trade announcement, already names "Dentrix Ascend" in the list of software behind "an active user base of more than 80,000 practices." The product's own website, captured by the Internet Archive on May 17, 2014, still carried an "Early Adopter Program" link and pitched "a fresh new interface that packs the most advanced clinical, front office and business management capabilities into a surprisingly easy and intuitive new user experience," with "the freedom to use whatever devices make sense for your practice, from PCs to iPads," and "every part of this reimagined solution is available to you for one monthly subscription." The fiscal 2014 10-K, a year later, counts "more than 90,000 practices" and shows Dentrix Ascend with a registered trademark symbol.
Then the corporate structure changed around the product. Henry Schein's fiscal 2018 Form 10-K reports that "On July 1, 2018, we closed on a joint venture with Internet Brands, a provider of web presence and online marketing software, to create a newly formed entity, Henry Schein One, LLC." The venture holds "Henry Schein Practice Solutions products and services, as well as Henry Schein's international dental practice management systems and the dental businesses of Internet Brands." Henry Schein took 74 percent, Internet Brands 26 percent, and the company recorded $567.6 million of noncontrolling interest. The fiscal 2025 10-K adds two later facts: Internet Brands' interest "has since increased to a 33.6% noncontrolling interest," and the venture pays Internet Brands "approximately $31 million annually" under a ten-year royalty agreement for the use of its intellectual property.
Where the cloud product sits now, by the company's own numbers. The fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 24, 2026, reports an active user base of approximately 95,000 practices and 324,000 consumers across a list of brands that begins AxiUm, Dentally, Dentrix Ascend, DentalVision, Dentrix Dental Systems. Global Technology net sales were $675 million, 5.1 percent of consolidated net sales, at a 67.7 percent gross margin, and grew 7.1 percent; the internally generated part of that growth "was primarily attributable to the adoption of our core practice management solutions, particularly our cloud-based platforms, as well as an increase in revenue cycle management solutions." An earlier quarterly release, the Form 8-K exhibit of November 13, 2023, is more specific: "Henry Schein One achieved strong growth across its practice management software products, with particular strength in its cloud-based solutions, Dentrix Ascend and Dentally."
From the document
Dentrix Ascend provides a completely new experience in dental practice management.
Who it applies to
Every practice that has to pick a practice management system, and especially every owner who has been told the choice is between "the cloud" and "a server." Dentrix Ascend is the milestone because it is the point at which the company behind the most installed on-premise system in American dentistry offered a subscription alternative under the same brand, which made the question unavoidable for practices that had never considered leaving.
Multi-location owners in particular. The cloud argument for a single office is convenience; for a group it is that one login reaches every location, and the current product line around Ascend, analytics, enterprise reporting, revenue cycle tools, is built for that reader.
It does not apply to anyone looking for an independent evaluation. Nothing in this record compares Ascend to Eaglesoft, Open Dental, CareStack, Curve or Dentrix itself on speed, cost or reliability. The fiscal 2025 10-K is useful here only because it names those competitors in a filing, and because it lists Weave Communications among the companies Henry Schein competes with in patient relationship management, which is a fair map of how the office stack is divided.
What changed
Before 2014 the default dental software purchase was a perpetual license installed on a server in a closet, with a support plan, a backup the practice was responsible for, and an upgrade the practice scheduled. Dentrix Ascend moved four things to the vendor at once: the hardware, the backup, the upgrade and the data. What the practice got back was access from any device and a single monthly bill; what it gave up was possession.
The second change was structural rather than technical. In 2018 the software business stopped being a division of a distributor and became a joint venture with an internet marketing company, with an annual royalty for intellectual property and an outside partner whose stake grows over time. That is worth knowing when you are negotiating with the company that holds your schedule and your ledger.

Where the source is
The announcement linked above is the trade press report in Orthodontic Products, dated April 8, 2014, which reproduces Henry Schein's statements and Kevin Bunker's quotes; a company release is the underlying document and is not on the SEC record, so the trade report is what was read for this page. Henry Schein's own Forms 10-K on EDGAR carry the verifiable parts: the fiscal 2013 report for the first appearance of Dentrix Ascend, the fiscal 2018 report for the Henry Schein One joint venture terms, and the fiscal 2025 report for the current user base, segment sales, competitor list and royalty agreement, with the November 13, 2023 Form 8-K exhibit for the cloud growth language. The product's 2014 marketing survives only in the Internet Archive's capture of dentrixascend.com from May 17, 2014, which is linked as such. Current product pages at henryscheinone.com and dentrixascend.com are the company's marketing and are cited here only for what the company claims.
