In-network

A dentist who has signed a contract with a specific insurance plan to accept its fee schedule for its members.

In-network describes a dentist who has signed a participation agreement with a specific insurance plan, agreeing to accept that plan's fee schedule and its rules in exchange for being listed in the plan's directory and, in theory, drawing more patients from that plan's member base. The tradeoff is explicit: lower fees for the volume and referral advantage of being findable in the plan's search tool.

Being in-network with a plan is a decision made one contract at a time, not an all-or-nothing identity for the practice. A practice can be in-network with several plans that pay reasonably and out-of-network with others that don't, and reviewing each plan on its own profit-per-hour math (rather than treating "insurance" as a single yes-or-no choice) is how most practices actually make this decision well.

New graduates and new practice owners often join every available network to build volume quickly, which is a reasonable phase-one strategy; the mistake is never revisiting those contracts once the practice has enough reputation and patient flow to be more selective about which plans are actually worth the discount.
