Hygiene department

The part of the practice devoted to preventive care (cleanings, perio maintenance and exams) run as its own profit center.

The hygiene department is the part of a practice organized around preventive care (cleanings, perio maintenance, hygiene exams), and in a well-run general practice it functions as its own profit center with its own production targets, not simply a support function that keeps patients coming through the door for the doctor. Treated well, it is also the practice's most reliable source of new treatment, since a hygienist who is genuinely looking is usually the first person to spot a failing restoration, a perio pocket that needs attention, or a watch item worth the doctor's opinion.

A "busy but broke" hygiene department is a specific, common diagnosis: the schedule looks full, but production per hygiene hour is low because exams are rushed, findings aren't being flagged and handed to the doctor, or the reappointment rate is soft enough that the recall base is quietly eroding even while today's schedule looks fine.

Running the hygiene department with its own KPIs (production per hour, reappointment rate, findings flagged and accepted) rather than judging it purely on whether the day is full, is what turns a department that merely keeps patients seen into one that actively grows the practice.
