Credentialing
The process of verifying a dentist's qualifications and enrolling them with an insurance plan before claims can be paid.
Credentialing is the verification process an insurance plan runs before it will pay a dentist as an in-network provider: confirming licensure, education, malpractice history, NPI and other identifying information, typically routed through a shared database like CAQH so the dentist doesn't have to submit the same paperwork separately to every carrier. It is a purely administrative process, but it can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months per plan, and a claim submitted before credentialing is finalized is often denied or paid at a lower out-of-network rate.
This makes credentialing timing a real operational issue, not a footnote, for any new associate joining a practice, any new practice opening its doors, or any practice adding a plan it wasn't previously part of. Starting the credentialing process the moment a hire is confirmed (well before their first clinical day) is the difference between that provider's early claims being paid correctly and a backlog of denied or reduced claims that then has to be individually appealed.
Someone in the practice should own credentialing status as an ongoing tracked task, since a lapsed or incomplete credentialing file with even one plan can quietly interrupt payment for months.
